Cool Climate Concrete
High Concrete Group’s Denver plant is a member of Cool Climate Concrete, an industry initiative to reduce the amount of Portland cement (a binding agent that typically comprises 10-12 percent of a concrete mix) by introducing alternative materials to concrete mixes. The independently audited program is aimed at reducing emissions of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases.
By reducing its use of ASTM C150 Portland cement, High is on track to help eliminate approximately 6,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide per year toward the program goal of 200,000 metric tons by October 2012 for the concrete industry. High uses supplemental cementitious materials (SCMs) such as slag, silica fume and fly ash to maintain concrete quality.
Cool Climate Concrete is a program of The Climate Trust, an Oregon-based 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that promotes climate change solutions by providing high quality greenhouse gas offset projects and advancing sound offset policy. Participating concrete producers submit documentation of concrete mix designs, truck tickets, bills of lading, invoices and computer printouts of cement/concrete sold. When verified, producers receive $4.00 per metric ton of carbon dioxide saved.
